Update on FDA Authorization for Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine for Children 6 Months to 4 Years of Age
Feb 10, 2022

(SAN ANTONIO, TX) – [February 10, 2022] Families across San Antonio and the nation have been eagerly awaiting news from the CDC and FDA for when COVID-19 vaccines will be given the green light for their children under the age of 5. South Texas Allergy & Asthma Medical Professionals (STAAMP) has been steadily tracking this progress and is hopeful to see this happen in the near future.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products advisory committee is scheduled to meet on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, to discuss the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children who are 6 months to 4 years of age. The FDA will issue a formal authorization following this meeting at a later date.

Many of our patients have asked when they will be able to vaccinate their children who are currently not eligible. Administration of the COVID vaccine for children in this age group can only begin once the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has issued clinical recommendations signed by the CDC Director.

“So many parents have expressed the sentiment of how they’re ‘almost there’ to being able to get back to public activities with their kids, especially their toddlers,” said Dr. Erika Gonzalez, President & CEO of STAAMP. “As soon as the green light is announced by the CDC, our team is ready to offer these kids the vital protection of the vaccine that has saved countless lives from the virus.”

The ACIP is scheduled to meet at a future date following the February FDA meeting. DSHS will issue guidelines when providers can begin administering vaccines. STAAMP will continue to keep our patients updated as the announcements and recommendations are made public to us.
