Wishing You a Joyous and Healthy Holiday Season:
Nov 30, 2023

As the holiday season approaches, it's a time of joy, festivities, and gatherings with loved ones. Thoughtful preparation can make all the difference in ensuring a safe and enjoyable celebration for individuals with allergies and asthma.

In this season of warmth and togetherness, let's explore some practical tips to make your holiday season merry, bright, and health-conscious for everyone involved.

  • Decorate Mindfully:
  • Opt for hypoallergenic decorations: Glass, plastic, and non-porous surfaces are easy to clean and reduce the accumulation of molds.
  • Check your Christmas ornaments: Unwrap them outside if possible and vacuum or wipe them down before setting them up to minimize dust and mold exposure.
  • Choose synthetic or non-allergenic Christmas trees: Pine pollen allergy is rare, but dust and mold can cause allergy symptoms when exposed to natural Christmas trees. Fir, Spruce, or cypress trees are alternatives if a pine allergy is present. Clean your natural or artificial tree before bringing it indoors.

  • Allergy-Friendly Menu:
  • Communicate dietary restrictions: Ask your guests or inform your host about specific food needs to accommodate everyone.
  • Label dishes with common allergens:  peanuts, nuts, wheat, milk, eggs, fish, soy, shellfish, and sesame are the most common food allergens in the US.
  • Have a separate food preparation zone: Prepare allergen-free dishes separately to avoid contamination.

  • Asthma Management:
  • Avoid strong-smelling candles and air fresheners: You can naturally scent your home by baking or creating potpourri from fresh ingredients like citrus and vanilla. If you enjoy candles, use non-scented or battery-operated ones.
  • Keep indoor air clean: Use a certified air purifier or HEPA Filter, and ventilate rooms frequently.

  • Eczema and Urticaria (Hives) Prevention:
  • Prefer Fragrance-Free: Provide fragrance-free hand soaps and moisturizers in the restroom or as gifts to prevent skin irritation.
  • Use soft, hypoallergenic linens and blankets:  Prioritize bedding sets and sitting linens that are gentle on the skin, reducing the likelihood of irritation for sensitive guests

  • Emergency Preparedness:
  • Ensure that your emergency medication, such as epinephrine auto-injectors or rescue inhalers, is readily available.

As you embrace these holiday tips for a safer and more allergen-conscious celebration, may your festivities be filled with warmth, joy, and shared moments.

Here's to a season of good health, happy gatherings, and cherished memories.
