Excitement fills the air as the new school year approaches! Taking proactive measures to support children with allergies and asthma to have a wonderful experience is important. Read our helpful tips on how to make the most of this fresh start and create an environment that fosters your child's optimal health and happiness. Let's make this back-to-school journey safe, successful, and filled with positive memories all year round!

Update their Treatment Plan:

Before the school year starts, schedule an appointment with your STAAMP provider to review and update your child’s allergy and asthma treatment plan. Check medications, inhalers, and Epinephrine auto-injectors are up-to-date and easily accessible.

Inform and Involve the School:

Communicate with teachers, the school nurse, and administrators about your child’s allergies and asthma. Consider a tour of the school together to identify potential triggers. Additionally, discuss your child's condition with relevant school personnel and complete an Anaphylaxis Action Plan if needed for life-threatening reactions.

Pack safe lunches and snacks:

For children with food allergies, prepare allergen-free lunches and snacks they enjoy. Talk to the teachers and children about the importance of not sharing food to avoid risks.

Allergy-free classroom:

Suggest using allergy-safe materials, avoiding strong fragrances, and prohibiting pets in the classroom. Ask the teacher to keep windows closed during low air quality and promote hand-washing for a healthier learning environment.

Allergy and Asthma action plan:

To ensure your child's safety, provide their school with a copy of their allergy, asthma, or anaphylaxis action plan. Confirm teachers and staff are familiar with the plan and know how to administer medications if needed.

Stay prepared for emergencies:

Provide your child's teacher with emergency contact information. Keep a spare set of medications at school in case of emergencies.

Educate classmates and friends:

Encourage open communication about your child's allergies and asthma among their classmates and friends. Promote understanding and support to create a safe and inclusive environment.

Let's work together to make this school year a positive and healthy experience for your child! With these tips, your child can thrive and enjoy the best the new academic year offers.
