Position Summary:

A Medical Assistant assists the medical physician with physical examinations, performs nursing treatments, and carries out other healthcare procedures and administrative tasks as directed by the healthcare provider. The goal of this position is to provide superior clinical and administrative support for the provider staff and deliver top quality customer service to patients.

Responsibilities:

  • Answering in-coming phone calls, checks voicemail, schedules appointments and checks patients in/out.
  • Verifies prior authorizations and enters prescriptions.
  • Completes patient registration forms as well as school and work excuses.
  • Takes and records height, weight, blood pressure, pulse rate, respiration and temperature.
  • Reviews medical history and records the patient's chief complaint.
  • Prepares treatment room, equipment, and patient for examination by provider.
  • Assists medical providers in the treatment, examination, and testing of patients. 
  • Performs procedures including ABIs, spirometry, PFTs, phlebotomy, and oral food challenges. 
  • Performs Xolair and Rush clinic procedures as well as allergy inject processes.
  • Updates patient care plan under direction of medical provider. 
  • Inputs pertinent information into the patient’s electronic health record (EMR) as necessary.
  • Restocks the treatment room and other clinic areas as necessary.
  • Provides postoperative and/or self-care instructions as directed by the medical provider.
  • Escorts patients to the business area for check-out and/or follow-up scheduling.
  • Decontaminates all treatment areas, sterilizes instruments, and disposes of contaminated materials after each patient appointment.
  • Monitors all incoming and outgoing lab work.
  • Performs housekeeping duties as required.
  • Process equipment and facility repair requests as needed.
  • Complies with and enforces all practice policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Complies with and enforces all OSHA policies, procedures, rules, and regulations, and reports incidents and/or violations as required.
  • Complies with and enforces all HIPAA standards, and reports ethics and compliance violations as required.
  • Complies with assigned work schedules and the practice’s timekeeping policies.


Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Minimum of (1) year medical assistant work experience. 
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. 
  • Medical Assistant (CMA) certification. 


Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly required to do the following:

  • Must have good or corrected vision as well as effective peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. 
  • Must have good manual dexterity and be able to use repetitive motion of the hands and arms.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position.
  • Must be able to occasionally move about inside the office to perform administrative tasks.
  • Must be able to constantly operate a computer and/or other office equipment such as a calculator, copy machine, or printer.
  • Must be able to frequently and effectively communicate in both written and verbal form.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds and/or push/pull objects up to 100 pounds.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills in the English language.
  • Must possess effective problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain professional relationships while addressing complex or sensitive issues with patients, families, medical staff, and coworkers
  • Ability to respond to emergent or stressful situations in a calm or professional manner.
  • Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, work independently, multitask, and produce results in a high stress environment.
  • Must possess intermediate computer skills using basic applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet browsing.
  • Must possess knowledge of federal, state, and commercial insurance regulations and programs.
  • Ability to read and comprehend patient medical history information, insurance explanations of benefits, computer screens and performance metrics.
  • Ability to use good judgment and critical thinking skills; ability to identify and resolve problems
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and protocols
  • Ability to maintain medical record
  • Ability to self-motivate, prioritize, and be willing to invest in a change process to improve efficiencies
  • Excellent written, verbal and listening communications skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse patients/family population
